About Cyproheptadine Tricholine Syrup

Cyproheptadine/tricholine syrup is a prescription medication primarily used as an appetite stimulant and for treating conditions related to the alimentary tract and metabolism. It often also contains sorbitol.

Description

The syrup is a combination of two (or three) active ingredients:

Cyproheptadine: An antihistamine that also acts as a serotonin antagonist. It works by reducing the effect of the chemical messenger serotonin in the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that regulates appetite, thereby stimulating hunger.
Tricholine Citrate: A bile acid-binding agent and hepatoprotective substance. It works by removing excess bile acids from the body, which causes the liver to produce more bile acids using cholesterol, thus helping to lower cholesterol levels and support liver function.
Sorbitol (if included in the formulation): A sweetener that also acts as an osmotic laxative to help relieve constipation, a common side effect of cyproheptadine.
